Bronchitis

Updated: Sep 23, 2021

Bronchitis is an inflammation and irritation of the airways that lead to the lungs. The condition is usually mild and eventually heals completely. Bronchitis may become severe in chronically ill people with heart or lung disease and the elderly. Viruses are the usual cause of bronchitis, but they may also result from bacterial infection or exposure to cigarette smoke or air pollution.

Bronchitis symptoms usually start with common cold symptoms like a runny nose, tiredness, chills, back and muscle aches, slight fever, and sore throat. After 3 or 4 days following the above symptoms, the person will develop a dry cough, which begins bronchitis. Some people may have a dry cough, and some may eventually have a more productive cough that produces sputum after a day or two. The mucus color may change from clear to white, yellow, or green depending on how severe the infection is. Someone with severe bronchitis may have a high fever for 3 to 5 days, after which most symptoms improve, but the cough may last several weeks. If the airways are blocked, the person may become short of breath. Wheezing is common, especially after coughing. Pneumonia could develop.

Having bronchitis with another lung disease, such as asthma, may increase the risk for pneumonia. Frequent lung infections, especially in a person who smokes, may lead to chronic bronchitis. Tobacco smokers are also at high risk for developing emphysema. Chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma are known as chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD).
